Default Maintenance

I've just put in 3 gallons of destilled water in my x4 6volt batteries I thought they were loosing their charge. Let's see if that helps.

probably not going to help......much
once you let the cells get exposed, they are damaged. Covering them with water at that point just makes you feel good, doesn't help them.

if you have a charger that boils them off, you need to check them more often.

agreed, but thought topping up would be the first step before changing them out, They seem tobe holding longer.
i'll put my high rate discharge meter on them this week. see whats up.

Mine weren't completely empty but I'm guessing -at least- half. It was weaker at holding the first charge, but after that has been great. Hopefully yours will hold up

Do a equalization charge for best results. Basically on fully charged batteries, hit them with 15.5 volts for a couple hours. Make sure to disconnect trailer from batts when doing this.

Interesting, 15.5volts would that be on FAST charge? I'll read your link thanks makes sense.

Any time water gets low crystals will form on plates. Adding a bunch of water, you will have a concentrated acid mixture down low and water on top. The 15.5v will cause vigorous bubbling which will mix the water/ acid to a more consistent mix. It will also shead some plate material that will hopefully bring some of the lost capacity back. Need to use a meter and monitor voltage while doing this. Most smart chargers wont get voltage high enough.

You need a big charger that puts outs at least 50 or 60 amps or more for that many batteries to do what Mark is suggesting.

Can do 2 at a time. Starting voltage may only be 14v that's OK leave it on for a while it should rise. Hence the need to monitor while doing this and SG readings are the best way to monitor. Tip: if your charger doesn't have a built in fan, use a portable and keep air flowing to keep charger cool. Always wear safety glass while working on batts

Have read good things about this unit. 40 amps on high and small enough to throw in the rig. I like things with a dual purpose

to equalize or "boil" the batteries, it's more about voltage than it is amperage.
your 125 amp may top out at 14.6 volts, which isn't enough.

I use CTEK Chargers on my batteries.
They have a recondition setting too.

http://smartercharger.com

I'm sure I don't need to tell most of you but be VERY careful while charging batteries.
Do not wiggle those clamps on the battery while the battery is charging.
In High School auto shop I saw a guy do this and the spark lit the Hydrogen gas coming out of the battery and the whole top half of the battery exploded off the thing.
The guy had to go to the hospital to get his eyes and face treated for the acid burns.
There were plastic shards in the ceiling as well as bits of the battery all over the place.
Remember, Hydrogen is what the Hindenburg was filled with when it exploded.
And Hydrogen is what comes out of a battery when it is charging.
